RE:MEMBER .Issue 37
Welcome
Welcome to the March issue of RE:MEMBER!
Let’s begin with a show of hands from members who participated in the
AIGA Chicago chapter survey that was e-mailed out on February 12. Kudos
to the members with their hands up! Members who don’t have their hands
raised: We urge you to complete the chapter survey as soon as possible.
Why? Because your critical feedback is vitally important in helping to
shape chapter activities and improving member services so that we may
better serve our members’ needs.
Completing the survey will only take a few minutes of your time and is greatly appreciated. Please fill one out now!
Those of you who weren’t able to make it to Clear Space I in
February can read below for a summary of that event. Just don’t forget to register for our first Business of Design series event taking place on March 12.
“Eventually everything connects—people, ideas, objects. The quality of the connections is the key to quality per se.”

Business of Design I - Katrina Markoff of Vosges Haut-Chocolat
Wednesday, March 12
Alliance Francaise
54 W. Chicago Avenue
Chicago, IL 60610
7:30am doors open
8am-10am presentation
The Business of Design series brings together Chicago’s business
thought leaders in design, marketing, communications, strategy and
research. We’ll tap the genius and the lessons learned from inspiring
business leaders who understand the value of design and integrate
design throughout their organization.
Katrina Markoff, owner and chocolatier of Vosges Haut-Chocolate,
has built her business into a nation-and world-spanning enterprise.
Born into a Macedonian family in Indiana, Markoff brings an
international perspective to her chocolate business. Using a spectrum
of ingredients ranging from dark chocolate to paprika, Vosges’ exotic
truffles offer customers a wide variety of flavors and experiences.
With recognition ranging from the Bon Appetit Food Artisan of
the Year Award to certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise,
Markoff and Vosges have become a powerful brand in the world of
chocolate.

Small Talk II - Studio Blue
Tuesday, March 25
800 W. Huron Street
Chicago, IL 60622
6pm
Studio Blue
combines careful research and thoughtful strategy with sophisticated
form making, creating books, Web sites, identities, exhibits and
signage systems for cultural and educational institutions.
The studio’s projects employ the traditional tools of graphic
design, including obsessive sensitivity to typographic nuance and
meticulous attention to production detail, along with a contemporary
authorship to yield distinct results. Studio Blue’s work is proof that
good design can improve the sales of a catalogue, explode traffic on a
website, and fundamentally alter the visitor’s experience of an
exhibit.
This event is sponsored by Artisan, Dupli-Graphic and Getty Images.
Clear Space I summary
Clear Space I was held at The Motel Bar,
a retro-inspired lounge in River North. In spite of the cold, about 30
members came from all over town, even from as far as Glen Ellen. It was
a great networking opportunity; a number of college students and recent
graduates mixed and mingled with some of our more experienced members.
It was a fun night filled with interesting conversation.

Design Community Events
Newsworthy
Newsworthy is an interactive exhibition hosted by UIC MFA students at the Hyde Park Art Center. This event is part of Drive By, a larger exhibit that is being held by MFA students at the University of Illinois Chicago’s School of Art and Design. Newsworthy
is intended to transform the official news monologue into a community
dialogue. It will feature a scrolling background with a live RSS feed
from the Chicago Tribune and viewers will have the chance to interact
directly by posting comments about the news. The exhibit will run from
March 10-23. Students will start accepting comments on March 8. For
more information visit the Newsworthy Web site or the Hyde Park Art Center Web site.
Imaging by Numbers: A Historical View of the Computer Print
The Block Museum’s current exhibitions—Imaging by Numbers and Space, Color and Motion—examine
the intersection of digital technology and the graphic arts. Both
exhibitions focus on artists who wrote their own computer code or
collaborated with computer engineers to create their works. Visit the Block Museum Web site for more information.
