Small Talk V IDEO, Chicago
Event Overview:
AIGA Chicago Small Talks are designed to be intimately scaled events that offer attendees the opportunity to learn about business practices, view work and experience environments to local studios and firms first-hand. Join us for Small Talk V with a visit to IDEO.
IDEO is an innovation and design firm that uses a human-centered, design-based approach to help organizations in the business, government, education, and social sectors innovate and grow in three ways:
1. Identify new ways to serve and support people by uncovering their latent needs, behaviors, and desires.
2. Visualize new directions for companies and brands and design the offerings— products, services, spaces, media, and software— that bring innovation strategy to life.
3. Enable organizations to change their cultures and build the capabilities required to sustain innovation.

The studio's design wasn't so ground-breaking, but their methodology was phenomenal. I heard a discussion at the last HOW conference in which Ric Grefé expressed the need for graphic designers to move up the food chain. In order for our profession to survive, he said we need to become design thinkers and strategists rather than makers of artifacts. I think IDEO is a supreme example of design thinking at its best.
