"Design sells" has become an accepted fact, but the responsibility of proving its effectiveness has been put on the designer. Traditionally a matter of client trust and the persuasion of a compelling creative rationale, today?s client companies are now demanding tangible, bottom line results for their considerable investment. The design community and it?s associations have made very little effort to educate business about the process and value of design, no wonder most "civilians" still don?t really understand what design is or what it does. "Award-winning design", meaning awards bestowed by a small, inbred community of designers are often superficial and commercially unviable. Design schools do not teach students about the value of market research in relation to creating successful design solutions, so the disconnect between the business and design worlds continue despite spirited pro-design messages from Tom Peters, Randall Rothenberg, John Hockenberry and others.

12 Japanese Masters is a beautiful book full of stunning images of Japanese posters, furniture, and objects. These are the portfolios of eleven men and one woman who have done some thought-provoking work. We are accustomed to seeing great work in book after book and annual after annual, but it is the text that, even though it is packed into a few pages with narrow margins, makes this book extraordinary.
